With Keywords On Search Engines...
Special Request - on your web pages PLEASE DON'T LIE in your keywords! Nothing ticks me off more than doing a search on the major search engines and having up to 10 or more pages of garbage returned to me! Ok, ok, ok - you don't want to be on page 40 or 50 of a search return when you actually DO have the content I'm seeking because chances are I won't see you. It's certain I won't find you if I have to wade through a bunch of garbage first. Let me give you a little hint here ...when I get a ton of garbage on a search engine I leave it and go to another one to get what I need. I don't waste my time digging through too many pages trying to find what I need - but then, I'm not a newbie, also maybe I know a bit more about refining my searches than most. Sadly, this is not the case for a lot of people who may really WANT - maybe even NEED - to find YOU. How High Is Your Traffic...? "Several times I've seen it suggested that to make reasonable money from a web site you need at least 500 unique visitors a day." That seems about right. See our Dinner Menu for more on how to achieve these kinds of numbers. Search engines can do a lot for you, but there are many other methods, some of which may actually work far better for you depending on the type of site you have. A Little Experiment... Last month I ran a little expriment. I used two free postcard/e-card sites for this on two different domains. One used graffic images with a spacial look and feel, the other was quite plain, short, simple design. Both had the exact same keywords put in. Neither of them were submitted to the search engines! (This is important to know here...) Within 3 days one of them was receiving 95% more traffic from search engines than the other. Additionally, of that traffic received and according to my logs 90% of this NEW traffic used the free card service. Further - 45% went deeper into the site to see what else it had to offer! My point here - DESIGN is just as IMPORTANT as KEYWORDS. Oh, by the way, this new Search Engine traffic - almost 40% came from YAHOO! If you're new to search engines this may not be very significant to you. Those of you who have played this game for a while know what an achievement this is. And yes, it was the simple plain design that won! No Guarantees... "...no matter how you massage your meta-tags and titles, add gateway or cloaking pages, there are 70 million people out there who won't tell you what they are going to search for. Almost every one of them will escape your net, no matter how fine the mesh. If you put "computers", then they'll search for "PC" (or "Mac"), if you sell cars, they'll search for "vehicle" or "hatch-back" - and if you include every synonym under the sun, the engines will penalise you in their ratings for having too many keywords!" I'll be here a year or more if I go into all there is to know on meta tags. Heck, I haven't even had time to do most of them accurately on my own pages. Generally, I go back and clean them up as I go... but I don't recommend this, ok? Instead, to your right on this page are some excellent resources to help you optimize them on your site pages. To receive a free mailout from me on sites you can visit to learn more about meta tags (some of which have meta tag builders on site) just send me a quick email to tags@auniverse.com and my auto responder will send one to you (if you enter your email address correctly). |

Keywords of the Day...
Here's a great site that tells us what the top keywords were for the previous week/day. http://www.peakp.com/topkeywords.htm Before search engine optimization on your site, check it for the top 3 mistakes most webmasters and/or companies make: 1 - the HTML layout / navigation scheme is not laid out for optimal search engine indexing, 2 - the download time is too long because the graphics are not compressed properly (or at all), 3 - the pages' contents are not written for web marketing but rather taken from offline sales and marketing materials. Go to our free tune-up page first - it will tell you a lot more than this page on how to optimize your site in the Search Engines! Free Keyword Count.. Use their form to analyze the keyword frequencies of the top words (excluding HTML tags) on a URL. http://www.keywordcount.com/ Enter your full URL (including the http://) of a page to analyze. Enter a 2nd URL -compare word frequencies of a separate page. Search Engine Ranking...
